I mentioned in another post that I go into Pinewoods Elementary every Thursday and I wanted to share an experience I had related to Miss Miller's first grade class. Recently, I've been helping a student, Hajayra, who has been having trouble with her ending sounds. Miss Miller has a book full of ideas and activities to use for students having difficulties in certain reading areas. However, there were no activities specifically for ending sounds. I tried to think of a way to help her and I finally decided to help her on the Starfall.com website. It is a GREAT website for students learning to read, because it has the ABC's, making words, and even reading. In the word making part, it shows the ending sound for a bunch of words like _AT, it could be HAT, CAT, BAT, or RAT. It first shows the AT, sounds that out and then shows a picture and says the word that is to be formed. She really enjoyed it when she got them right and I think having my approval was important to her.
I learned about ESOL students and helping them learning with computer websites. Hajayra will be repeating the first grade, but she has made some good progress towards reading this year. Some challenges I faced were making sure the website was appropriate and having her focus on the computer. It was easy to explore the website, which was recommended to me by my mom so I knew it couldn't be bad. Hajayra's attention span is very short and I had to keep switching her focus back to the computer, because she wanted to see what the rest of the class was doing. I learned something about myself, I have a lot of determination. It didn't occur to me until I wanted Hajayra to do all the exercises and do them right. Of course, we didn't have time for it, but I saw her potential and wanted to see her succeed.
I have enjoyed all the classroom time I have experienced and I can only look forward to more.

E-learning in Business? - "A"
This article isn’t what I thought it was going to be about, but I still learned about technology as it relates to training employees. In the UK, e-learning has become the main way of training future staff of many IT firms. The article goes on to say that while most instruction can be taught through the computer, the need for the classroom still remains strong. When it comes to firsthand experience, the classroom is needed and it also provides the one-on-one a teacher can provide. It says that economically, the e-learning makes the most sense.
I didn’t particularly like this article, mostly because it strayed to a more business type setting. I did find one part really interesting and it answered the question I had about ensuring all my students education. It was that e-learning provided the chance for shy students or students who would feel too uncomfortable in a classroom to ask questions to their teachers. I really liked that, because it made me think about all the types of students I will have and how they may not want to participate in class.

A Math Teacher's Story - "A"
This article is about a media specialist turned part-time math teacher at a high school in Orlando, FL. After a new high school opened, she was transitioned to fill a gap and realized the vast difference between the library classroom and a math class. Being a media specialist she always encouraged her fellow teachers to try and use technology, but when faced with it herself, she realized how big a challenge it was. Her new classroom no longer had a chalkboard, but video screens and projectors, which could display graphs. She was able to expand her voice through a microphone around her neck and using the speakers on the ceiling. Also she used PowerPoint to show the upcoming schedule and for lessons. The computer system allowed a connection with the television and she helped students make presentations using them.
I thought this article was perfect for me, because I want to be a high school math teacher. Knowing that she was able to use the technology available and want to teach in the classroom was a comfort to me. The article addresses the question of technology integration in schools and it gives a personal testimony. She compares what it was like twelve years ago and it is a stark contrast to what she is now teaching in. I hope that this article appeals to other high school teachers, because I know it seems like the hardest classroom to use technology. Class periods are short and computers aren’t always available, but I was encouraged with this article.

Next Generation Classroom, is it really? - "A"
The Next-Generation Classroom, what does that sound like to you? To me it sounds like a peek into what our classrooms may look like when we become teachers. This article was published in 2004, so we are seeing more technological classrooms already. It talks about a $50 million classroom building at Central Michigan University, which was changing the way of teaching there. One teacher there considered himself as ‘old school’, he said that all he needed was a piece of chalk and a group of students. However, before he retired he decided to embrace the technology so he would have experienced it. It mentions a lecture he gave where he used PowerPoints, videos, and he was recording himself to form DVDs. It also said that he could have easily streamed his lecture on the web or accessed professors thousands of miles away on the videocam. While he said that it takes more preparation to use technology in a lesson, he also has become closer with his students.
I chose this article because I wanted to know what the ‘Next-Generation Classroom’ was and what was inside it. In 2007 we are in the next generation classroom at FGCU, because compared to the classroom in the article we have all the same equipment. Maybe everything is brand new in CMU, but it all works the same. It answers even more my question of how to integrate technology in the classroom. I thought it was interesting that the professor said there was no difference in his student’s grades with or without using technology. I enjoyed the article and appreciated FGCU a little more for being up to date on technology.
